I can recall Birnbeck Pier when it was still open in the early 60s and taking a steamer trip to Ilfracombe with my grandmother from there. If my memory serves me correctly the derelict Cliffs tearoom is what used to be the Toll Road gatehouse where you paid your tolls. Surprisingly, while I knew both of the WSM piers, I had never come across nor visited the Clevedon Pier – what a wonderful construction and excellent photos. Great stuff.
Interesting to hear your memories, Birnbeck deserves to be saved and it must have been magnificent to travel from it by steamer. I was wondering why there would be a building at cliffs tearooms so the toll booth makes sense. Clevedon is a beauty, hope you get the chance to visit one day.
Gorgeous photographs. Also I must commend you for being so brave to post your photos without a watermark. I am a huge advocate of doing that. Spent a day in Weston Super Mare a while back and wrote about it on the blog, but your scenes capture a side that I did not see. Wrote about it on the blog. Truly wonderful.
I tend to think that an organisation that would pay for photos would do so irrespective of watermarking. Not to mention that outside of commercial archives the size of watermark tends to be inversely proportional to the quality of the photography!
