Today is the first day of the walk that the rain is so heavy and relentless that I can’t take the camera out once during the ten hours I’m outside. To have any chance of being seen on the road, I wear a hi-viz vest with a head torch switched on, even during daylight. By lunchtime, I’m soaked to the skin (warm and damp being the best I hope for in such situations) and in need of some shelter.

I always love a second-hand bookshop so to arrive in Wigtown, which contains the largest bookshop in Scotland, seems heaven-sent in the circumstances. A couple of hours later I leave Wigtown charmed, inspired and full of pancakes, the perfect combination to sustain me for five more hours of walking through the deluge.

Funny that you would like to have stayed there – they have a holiday let and you can volunteer in the book shop. The owner – Shaun has a best selling book ‘ the diary of a bookseller ‘ – he even reads it on audible and as featured on Radio 4.
Not sure that’s my idea of a holiday but I see it’s very popular! I noticed him and the book on my brief visit, I’ll check it out. Which other bookshops would you recommend in Wigtown – I only had time to visit this one?
That is the biggest – there is lots out back that we never get to. Wigtown book festival is worth a visit as are every book place in the village.
I’ll make sure I don’t have to carry my purchases on my back next time!
