First day of the midges. Rather than repel the midges the ‘repellent’ attracts them and then kills them!

I picked up over a dozen ticks today walking through low vegetation like this which is by far the worst I’ve ever experienced. This is a concern as they can carry Lyme disease in this region.

The west shore of Loch Striven became too difficult to follow so I took to the high ground and made camp with a view across to the isle of Arran.

Wonderful photos as ever but I’m missing the map. Always interested to see your route especially in the rugged areas you are approaching. Good luck through the midges.

  2. Richard Greenwood says:

Sorry my mistake. Map shows on website but not on email notification.

    • Glad you got it – the map loads from google’s servers so only shows on the blog. A lot more improvising with route finding on this stretch.

  3. Pete says:

Great photo opportunities in the woods, but I suspect the midges will keep you on move.

  4. I’m not being allowed to ‘Like’ a few of these blog posts for some reason. I’ll keep trying. I wanted to ask what is that delightful midge ‘repellent’ you are using? Are you slathered in Skin So Soft?

    • That’s funny, not sure why. Smidge is the most effective for me Skin so Soft works too but everything gets very oily which isn’t brilliant when I’m trying to keep the camera clean.

  5. We live on Bute with a view of Loch Striven. The midges over here have been relatively few. I think the hot dry weather we had in May and June wasn’t to their liking. Of course up sheltered glens it’ll probably be business as usual.

    • It hasn’t been too bad in Kintyre either, Cowal was really bad! Maybe they will be making up for their lack of irritation in the autumn.

Whether you have comments on the photos, some knowledge or a personal story on this area you’d like to share, or you’ve spotted a typo or error, I’d love to hear your thoughts.
