Quintin Lake

I'll be walking two to three months per year and the daily distance will be 20-40km depending on the going. I'll be camping in the wilder parts and staying in guest houses in urban areas.

Why do this? I hope to learn more about our mysterious island nation and I can't think of anywhere else where each footstep leads to such different surprises, beauty and strangeness.

“It is only shallow people who do not judge by appearances. The true mystery of the world is the visible, not the invisible" Oscar Wilde

Day 311: Durness to Durness via Faraid Head – Sango Bay Chain Home Radar Station

Date of walk: 17/6/19 At Durness hostel, I’m trying to sleep in a twelve-bed dorm room; a motorbike club takes all the other eleven bunks. I’m pretty sure I’m witnessing a world record for the volume of synchronised farting, burping and snoring. The following day […]

Day 309: Cape Wrath to Cape Wrath Bombing Range – Bothy & Battlefield

Date of walk: 14/6/19 My feet were white and crinkled from permanently wet boots when I fell asleep and are now hard and calloused in the morning. I treat them with cream in the tent to keep the skin supple and prevent splitting. As I’m […]

Day 308: Oldshoremore to Cape Wrath – the most north-westerly point!

Date of walk: 13/6/19 It’s past midnight as I squelch out of the moorland to reach the track to the Cape Wrath Lighthouse, Scotland’s remote northwest point. In the pouring rain, I collapse to my knees, overcome by relief and emotion to kiss the road, […]

Day 302: Lochinver to Point of Stoer – Storm Horizon

Date of walk: 7/6/19 It’s bright enough to walk till midnight, and I camp at Stoer Point. When it finally gets dark in the early morning, the only lights I can see are from four lighthouses: north towards Cape Wrath, west to Lewis, south at […]

Day 301: Lochan Sal to Lochinver – Lambs & Trolls

Date of walk: 6/6/19 At Loch An Eisg-Brachaird, having crossed the rough ground, I stop to cook a late breakfast by the shore. Vivid green grass and sea pinks blend into black, white and yellow lichen clad boulders nestled against the golden-green of seaweed. The […]
