The burn water is so peaty here it looks like tea before the bag is added!

The Caithness flagstone field boundaries give a strong sense of place like slate used in the same way in parts of Wales.

The flagstones are even used to hold a wire in this wall on the way to Thurso.

The Perimeter is a labour of love: it’s taken 454 days of walking, hundreds of hours of planning and thousands of hours of editing. If you have the means, I’d appreciate your support by buying a print or contributing so I can continue to share the project with you.

There’s something about the buildings made of the slate that seems very ‘ordered’ somehow. Very unlike the red sandstone where I live in Dumfries and Galloway, beautiful in its own way, though haphazard by comparison. Love the harbour at Fresgoe.
Sandside Harbour brought back lots of childhood memories! As did the flagstone boundaries which were everywhere around us – it was used a lot for paving too and could get quite slippery!
I witnessed that a few times! The flagstone quarry was evocative
I remember an inland one that they used to have motorcycle scrambling by – it was an interesting site. The drystone walls were a real local feature too and there seems to be good interest in keeping them going.
